Composti dal leader Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, Nathaniel “Jerry” Matthias e Raleigh Gordon (tutti nativi di Kingston), i the Maytals furono il primo gruppo ad usare la parola “reggae”, citandolo nel brano ‘Do the Reggay‘ (1968) prodotto da Leslie Kong.
